IIT Bombay is a first-generation IIT and, notably, one of the first Indian Institutes of Technology to be established in the country. It was established in 1958 after receiving foreign assistance from UNESCO and the Soviet Union. A few years later, the Government of India declared it an Institute of National Importance.
The functional organization of this autonomous and deemed university consists of a board of governors chaired by the President of India. Not only that but IIT Bombay was also selected as one of the top twenty institutes to receive a regulatory structure to enable world-class teaching and research at the institute under the Institute of Eminence Scheme by the Government of India in 2016.
Every year, more than a thousand students receive their graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees from IIT Bombay. Jointly with Washington University in ST Louis, the School of Management SJMSOM in IIT Bombay offers an Executive Master in Business Administration. This one-of-a-kind degree program is best suited for entrepreneurs and business professionals. Since the start of this course, it has been attended by participants with an average age of 40 years with 17 years of experience.
The IDC School of Design in IIT Bombay offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and dual degree programs. At the UG level, the four-year program of BDes spans eight semesters. The enrolled students can also opt for a dual degree program at the end of their third year. The dual degree program of BDes+MDes consists of ten semesters. The Akash Desai Center for Policy Studies offers a Master's degree in Public Policy (MPP) at IIT Bombay. In addition to an innovative curriculum, students enrolled in the MPP course are provided with internships and hands-on experience. The IIT Bombay admission process is based on highly competitive exams like JEE Advanced, GATE, UCEED, etc. Candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria and obtain scores within the cutoff range are granted admission to various degree programs.
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority releases the IIT Bombay cutoff for admission in BTech courses in the form of “opening rank” and “closing rank” across the total rounds of counseling conducted. These counseling are conducted after the JEE Advanced examination based on the choice of college and course filled in by the qualified students.
In the year 2023, the IIT Bombay cutoff ranking ranged between 67 and 9064. The branch of Computer Science & Engineering came out to be the most competitive. The Electrical Engineering branch and the integrated BTech and MTech courses in Electrical Engineering and Microelectronics closely followed it.
